- Check the expiration date on the can or carton of baby formula before using.
- Wash hands and the top of the infant formula can with warm water and soap before opening.
- Mix the baby formula exactly as directed. Read the directions carefully to ensure proper measurements. Do not add water to the infant formula if the directions do not call for it.
- Do not heat in the microwave. Instead place the bottle in bowl of hot water or run hot water over it.
- Test the temperature of the formula by shaking a few drops on the inner wrist. It doesn’t need to be hot just body temperature.
- Formula can be given to a child at room temperature or right out of the refrigerator.
- If the formula has been warmed, it must be given to the child immediately to keep germs from growing in it.
- If the child does not drink all of the prepared formula, throw the leftover amount out. Do not refrigerate to use again.
- Prepared bottles can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours (but no longer).
- If taking prepared bottles out of the house, carry them in an insulated container or plastic bag with a small ice pack. If the milk is not cold to the touch when taken out of the bag, don’t use it.
